Just like everyone else, I look at the scandal sheets and magazines while waiting in line at the grocery store. In case you didn’t know, Kirstie Alley is fat again and Brad and Angelina are still all over the place.
Recently, I noticed something new. I have seen something on a magazine about the “hottest toddlers” or some such nonsense. I also kept seeing the name Shiloh. I was a bit curious about who was Shiloh. I am not even sure if this toddler is a boy or a girl but apparently he/she is the progeny of the aforementioned Angelina and Brad. I think; I could be mistaken.
The article was about how Shiloh was upset about something. Is this for real? First of all, who cares? Secondly, how would anyone know this? This is a 2 year old we are talking about. He/she probably still poops in their pants.
Are things that bad in the world of celebrity gossip that the rags have to resort to making up stories on babies? Are all the celebrities behaving themselves and there is no fodder for the muckrakers? Maybe this is Princess Diana’s revenge.
Kinda funny, isn’t it?

Slow drivers
It used to be that drivers in New Jersey drove like maniacs. This is still somewhat true on the Turnpike and Parkway. However, I have come across a new phenomenon on secondary roads. More often than not, the drivers are going below the speed limit.
This really drives me insane. I don’t want to go 50 in a 25 MPH zone, but if the posted speed limit is 35, I like to go 35. I have to drive on Bergen Blvd. a lot. The speed limit is 35 MPH. Quite often, there is so much traffic, that we just crawl. But when there is no traffic, drivers are still doing 25! Why????
Now, you might think that it is older drivers who are doing this. Not so. I see people of all different persuasions who don’t seem to think it is okay to go as fast as posted. Are they all driving to the dentist to get a root canal?
This is so frustrating especially in the evening when I want to get home. Drive safely but it is okay to do 35 if that is what the sign says and traffic conditions allow.

The Morbidly Obese
I was watching a show about truly fat people. These people weigh 400, 500, 700 pounds. They are living in a clinic. As someone who has struggled with a weight problem all my life, I was interested to see what these people were about.
I’ve come to the conclusion that they are mentally ill. Seriously. I am not trying to be mean but after listening to them I can come to no other conclusion. And I wonder about the administrator of this place also.
One man gained several hundred pounds while living in this place. He seems to have no motivation to lose weight and regain his health. The administrator says he keeps this guy there because if he sends him home, he’ll die. Hello!! He’s going to die under your care, you doofus. The administrator allows these people to cheat on their diets by ordering food in. If I were in charge, it would be my way or the highway. You are not helping people by enabling them and letting them continue their self-abusive behavior. Can you imagine your doctor telling you, “You have diabetes. Don’t worry about it. Here, have a donut.”
I also wonder who is paying for the care of the patients. I am guessing that they are on Medicare or Medicaid. If our tax dollars are paying for this, we should see some results. If this clinic cannot get these people to lose weight, they need to go somewhere else (preferably a place that does not have McDonald’s such as Antarctica).
As someone who has to work every day not to weigh 300 lbs. myself, I cannot fathom how these people cannot want to take care of themselves. That is why I feel they have mental problems.
I love this one guy’s story. He weighed 1,000 lbs. He got a famous fitness guru to help him lose weight. He got down to 199 lbs. I guess he was so happy that he celebrated and put 50 lbs back on in a week and got back up to 500 lbs or so. Now faced with numerous health problems, he cries because he might have to go to the Bronx Zoo to get an X-Ray because that is the only place that has the equipment to handle his girth.
These people are sad and they need our prayers. But somebody please call a psychiatrist and an accountant and do an audit.

McMansions
I enjoy watching the shows on HGTV. One of my favorites is “House Hunters”. But I gotta tell you, I sometimes get blown away by what people want.
I see people looking for houses that have 4 – 5 bedrooms, living room, family room, numerous bathrooms, etc. One couple had so many rooms on the house they selected that the wife called it the “hors d’oeuvre” room.
Then there are the kitchens. Some of these kitchens are bigger than most of the restaurant kitchens I’ve seen on the kitchen nightmare show. And one refrigerator is not enough. Must have 2 and a big, six burner stove. Sometimes there is more than 1 microwave. My favorite amenities are the pot filler over the stove and the vegetable sink. Apparently, the pot filler is a spigot so you can fill a stockpot and not have to carry it from the sink to the stove. I have no idea how you get it from the stove to the counter. Maybe there is a pot conveyor belt. And you need a separate sink to wash vegetables? You can’t rinse them in one sink and then move them?
And finally, we come to cleaning these behemoths. I guess most of the people who can afford these places can also afford cleaning staff. But I just keep thinking, “I sure wouldn’t want to clean that place”.

The Passing
On Friday a television newsman died suddenly. Out of respect to his family I will not mention his name but I am sure you can guess who it is.
I could not believe that this story was getting wall to wall coverage. I think this man was the president, the pope, king of England, president of the European Union and the first man on the moon all rolled into one. He must have discovered the vaccine for polio and was thisclose to a cure for cancer.
I mean, really, he was a TV reporter! I can honestly say that I never once watched his program. I was somewhat disconcerted because of his age which was 58. My oldest brother keeps saying that is the danger year and, if you can get past that, you will be alright.
May he rest in peace but give it a rest. He may have been a leader in network news but his impact on most of us was minimal.

Entitled?
(Note: out of respect for the office, I will refer to Michael Pfleger as father although I do so grudgingly.)
I recently saw the clip of a speech by Fr. Pfleger at Trinity United Church of Christ in which he mocked Sen. Hillary Clinton. In it, he said that Sen. Clinton was upset that Barack Obama had entered the presidential race. He said that she felt that as a white person she was entitled to get the nomination over a black (technically mixed race) candidate.
I don’t know about anyone else but I have never, ever felt entitled to anything because of my race. It just never entered my mind. The only time I feel entitled to something is when I work for it.
Is this what Black people believe? Do they really think that white people feel that they have an inherent right to things because of race? I guess things used to be that way but haven’t we progressed way beyond that? It upsets me tremendously to think that there is still so much racial bitterness in this country. Is that the reality or is it just the pipe dreams of the race baiters?

Is It Raining?
Don’t you just love these people who are clueless about the weather and the traffic? I don’t know about you but when I get up in the morning I like to listen to the news and make sure the world is still spinning. I can remember waking up several times and discovering something really awful happened as I slept. Two examples are the assassination of Robert Kennedy and the murder of John Lennon.
I know that the weatherman has a terrible record but you still need to check them out because occasionally they are right. Sometimes they’ll go on for several days about an approaching storm. Now, the storm might go out to sea but at least be aware of the possibility. Not these people. You get, “Oh, is it gonna snow? I had no idea.” but they can quote verbatim every episode of their favorite TV show.
Let’s move on to traffic. I don’t think there is a radio station in the NY Metro area that does not do morning traffic reports. It’s also on all the morning TV news programs. Yet, time after time I get phone calls at work with the caller saying, “I’m caught in traffic. I have no idea what is going on.” Uh, Rt. 4 is closed in both directions. It’s been on the news every 30 seconds. “Oh, I didn’t know”.
Wake up! Listen to a traffic report. It’s not that difficult. Some stations tell you exactly when the reports will be on (on the 8’s; on the 1’s.) It makes you wonder how they can find their way to the office.
And scariest of all, these people can vote.
