Get A Life

“Get a life,” someone is told when they spend a lot of time on certain activities. Usually this activity consumes a lot of a person’s free time.

I have never understood that. What is so terrible about someone wanting to be involved in something about which they are passionate? That is, of course, as long as it is not self-destructive or disruptive to their job and/or family.

To me, that activity is a person’s life. I work because I have to but it is not my passion. I much prefer to spend my time being a Mets fan and keeping up on current events and politics. Some may say I spend to much time watching the games but I say, “So what?”

This phrase was directed recently at a poster on a forum. The person who wrote it was obviously upset because this person has a lot of passion for the town in which they live. Why should they get a life? Caring about their town is their life.

Get over it.

Burden on Society

Growing up, we learned the story of Capt. John Smith and the Jamestown colony. Allegedly, he told the colonists that if they didn’t work, they wouldn’t eat. I was also taught that we should not be a burden on society.

Do you ever hear that phrase today? I am sure if you used it in public, the politically correct police would jump all over you. But what is wrong with that? What is wrong with wanting to be self-sufficient? Why do we expect our fellow citizens to take care of us? Now, I am not saying that giving a helping hand when necessary is wrong. But I know people who think it is perfectly okay to be a lazy lunk and live off the taxpayers.

Right now, I am at a point in my life where I have to think seriously about retirement. I am trying to save as much as I can. I don’t want to be a burden on society. I want to take care of myself. Unfortunately, we get taxed so much that it makes it very difficult.
But I persevere.

Getting Along

When you see conflicts around the globe, it makes you really proud to be an American. We are the most diverse country on the planet and for the most part, we get along. Yes, there are episodes involving racists and clashes here and there but it is the exception not the rule. And when the general public learns of these incidents, there is outrage.

And I think most people who are upset with illegal immigration are more angry with our government’s inaction rather than with the immigrants. After all, if you could just walk into Disneyland or Disneyworld any time you felt like it, wouldn’t you? So, I don’t blame these people for coming here to find a better life.

Most people, even if not Christian, are familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan. Who among us would not stop to help a person in trouble? Would we check out their ethnic background first? I think not. There are too many everyday citizens who rise to the occasion when they have to.

If America ever loses this attribute, the world will be a worse place.

End of a Species

Almost every day you hear of some road that can’t be built or tree that can’t be cut because of environmental concerns. We will be lectured by the environmentalist wackos that a species is in danger of being destroyed.

My question is this: has evolution ended? That is, if you believe that the evolution explains how the earth progressed, do you think that the earth has stopped evolving?

If we are still undergoing evolution, why wouldn’t it be natural for a species to die out? Maybe that is what is supposed to happen. What if the environmentalists are all wrong and they are really interfering with a natural process?

Think about it.

Sick of the Campaign

I hope I didn’t address this topic already. But I am sick to death of the presidential campaign. I listen to a lot of talk radio and day after day, hour after hour, it’s Barack this and McCain that. It wouldn’t be so bad but this has been going on for about two years now. I bet on January 21, 2009, someone from the losing party will start campaigning for the 2012 election.

And do the candidates think that the apathetic voter is paying attention? I think not. Only news junkies such as myself are paying attention. And they won’t have me for much longer either.

Ideas for Blog Posts

You know, I’ll be driving to and from a place and I’ll get a great idea for a blog post. Of course, when I am home, I cannot remember what I was thinking about. It’s very frustrating. I wish I had a tape recorder so I could keep track of my ideas.

Philadelphia

In my younger days, I was a huge fan of the NY Rangers. As a result, I hated our archenemy, the Philadelphia Flyers. I used to think of the city of Philadelphia with much disdain. Who want to go there or, worse yet, live there?

Even though I had been to Philly once while in high school, we just went to the Franklin Institute and didn’t see any other parts of the city.

Well, a couple of years ago, I was scheduled to attend an event in Philadelphia. A few weeks before that, I had some time off and decided to drive down to Philly on a Sunday and check things out. I figured traffic would be lighter on a Sunday and I was correct.

I take back all the awful thoughts I ever had about the city (but not the Flyers!) It really is a beautiful city and there are tons to see and do there. I briefly walked around the historical area but unfortunately did not have time to really explore as much as I would have liked.

I liked it much better than Boston which surprised me. I think because it seems that most of the historical district is in one area. In Boston, an 18th century cemetery is surrounded by skyscrapers and things like that. It loses some of the ambience that way.

I have not had a chance to return to Philly since then. I hope that I will be able to some day.
