Just Another Monday

Today is Memorial Day which used to be called Decoration Day because on this day the graves of the dead from the Civil War were decorated and cleaned up. Now it is for all those who gave their lives in the service of our country. Pretty serious stuff, don't you think?

I try to observe Memorial Day in a thoughtful way and today is the first time in years in which I did not participate in the services held in Edgewater. That is not to say that I did not meditate on the lost men and women.

Earlier today, I decided to get out of the apartment for a while. I took a ride and passed many shopping malls. They were quite full. I heard people doing construction work today. It was just another Monday; nothing special about it at all.

How many others went away for the week-end? Just another excuse to party, right? Isn't it great that we have all these extra days on which to get drunk? What's the next one? Oh yeah, the 4th of July. It's on a Saturday this year but most companies will give us the 3rd. Cool! Will anyone think of Washington, Franklin, Adams, etc? I know! I know! Samuel Adams is a beer. Who's the funny looking dude on the label? He sort of looks like the Quaker Oats guy.

And then we wonder why the country is in the shape it's in.

I've been praying this prayer by Archbishop Carroll. You might consider it.
