The other day I was listening to Dennis Miller while he was interviewing Newt Gingrich. The subject of Newt's conversion came up and Dennis said left the church because of the priest sex scandal. Sean Hannity has also said that the church should be glad that there is anyone left after that scandal. One wonders if Mr. Miller was looking for an excuse to leave the church.
Whoa! Do these two gentlemen and innumerous others not know the history of the Catholic Church? Yes, we have a lot of sinners in the church but what about the doctrine and dogma? No matter what human beings do to mess things up, the truth is the truth. You don't go from observant Catholic one day to a Protestant the next because of sinners in the church. Have they never heard the expression that the church is a hospital for sinners not a museum for saints?
Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is at the core of our faith. What does He tell Pilate that His name is? "I am". That means from the alpha to the omega, never beginning, never ending.
And what did we learn from Jesus? To love Him and each other. How did the Catholic Church carry out this mission? Let's see: caring for the poor, opening schools and hospitals and starting the first universities. Try and imagine what would happen if the Catholic Church decided to close all of these facilities. Ah, yes, the "government" would have to pick up the slack which will know means more taxes and less competence.
But every day, we read and hear about this scandal and that scandal in the Church. Of course, many newspapers, magazines and websites forget to mention that the statistics for sex abuse is much worse in public schools and other religions. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?
Yes, knock the Roman Catholic Church all you want but the truth will always win in the end.
