To Joke or Not to Joke

Has this ever happened to you? You have a casual relationship with someone that you see almost every day. You know, the mailman or the girl you chat with in the Ladies Room who works at another company. As times goes on, you feel quite comfortable with this person. Then, one day, you say something that you consider a joke and the person is completely offended. You apologize but it falls on deaf ears and you stand there, embarrassed and wonder how this happened.

I really don't understand this. I come from a culture where we joke and goof on each other all the time. For us, it's a sign of affection. For example, I was at choir rehearsal and saying how people give me these really huge clothes. I said, "I know I'm a big girl but this is ridiculous", showing off a shirt which came to my knees. It was near Christmas and a friend replied, "Don't worry, Mary, by the time Christmas is over, it will fit." Was I offended? Hell, no! I thought it was one of the funniest remarks I had ever heard.

So, all those people out there who are friendly one day and insulted the next, I didn't change, you did.

Bite me.
