Diet Saboteurs

After having a fun holiday season culminating with my birthday celebration on Monday, I decided to recommit myself to living a healthy lifestyle and eating properly with the goal of shedding pounds. To help myself, I am using an AA trick: counting the days "sober". So far, so good. I don't know exactly what happens but there is a definite change in the way my body reacts to food and it starts to drop weight.

Now, it is difficult enough to stay on a diet under ideal conditions. Ideal conditions for me are being able to control what I eat and when I eat. Of course, that is not always possible. For example, on Sunday I usually go out to eat with friends after church. By the time we get to the restaurant, I am usually quite hungry because it has been several hours since breakfast. So, I have to be careful and not give into the temptation of grabbing for the bread basket or eating the wrong foods.

And then we have the saboteurs. These are the friends who do not understand dieting because they have never had a weight problem or, if they do, don't care and don't diet. They will say things like, "Oh, c'mon, 1 piece of cake won't hurt you." Or, "It's Sunday. Treat yourself." I try to explain that my body doesn't know it is Sunday and it will disrupt how my body has adjusted itself. In other words, I would have to start all over again. They, in turn, react with disbelief and scorn.

And some people actually get offended when you stick to your guns and say you will not deviate from your way of eating. Of course, if I was an alcoholic, they wouldn't dream of offering me a drink.
